Surrey County Fined £120,000 for Data Protection Violation
9th June 2011

The Surrey County Council has been fined £120,000 by the Information Commissioner's Office (ICO) for having inadequate data protection procedures.  While the incident involved sending personal information to the wrong recipients and was not directly related to data disposal, it is a sign of changing times in the UK and the rest of Europe.

Information Commissioner Christopher Graham said, "Any organisation handling sensitive information must have appropriate levels of security in place. Surrey County Council has paid the price for their failings, and this case should act as a warning to others that lax data protection practices will not be tolerated."
