On February 6, 2009 the Boston Herald reported that Accountant Raymond P. Letourneau was fined $2,500 by Boston City Inspectors for illegal dumping. Unshredded tax documents dating back to 1985 and prepared by R.P. Letourneau Accounting Services were found in a dumpster behind a Dollar Store. Employees of the Dollar Store discovered a reported thousand or more tax documents containing sensitive personal information.
With the tax season in full swing, it will be in the best interest of accountants to contract a secure information destruction company rather than risking identity theft or the fines associated with improperly discarded data.
