BOXES OF MORTGAGE FILES DUMPED IN PARADISE
According to an article in the Pacific Business News (PBN) by Jim Kelly on March 9, 2007, thirty-nine boxes of records from a Honolulu escrow company that closed six years ago were dumped in a recycling bin in Niu Valley last weekend, spilling files containing Social Security numbers, loan applications, credit reports and other private financial information.
The boxes, discovered by a PBN staff member on Sunday, held the files of nearly 1,000 people who bought property in Hawaii between 1996 and 2000 and used Fidelity Escrow Services Corp.
Apparently, the fact that Fidelity Escrow Services in now out of business will prevent authorities from pursuing this under the state’s new shredding requirement or FACTA.
