OHIO BUREAU OF MOTOR VEHICLES DISPOSAL PRACTICES QUESTIONED – AGAIN

A Columbus, OH-based 10TV-WBNS investigation posted to its website on April 23rd found that the Ohio Bureau of Motor Vehicles continues to allow Social Security numbers, birthdates, driver's license numbers, photos and vehicle information to be casually discarded in a manner that puts them at risk.  According to the report, the problem has exposed hundreds of Ohioans to the possibility of identity theft.

The investigation claims to have uncovered personal information, apparently thrown in the Deputy Registrar's unlocked trash can, which ID thieves would treasure, including receipts with driver's names and license numbers. In all investigators report they went to 24 BMV locations and found personal information at 10 of them.

NAIDDirect reported in 2007 that the agency experienced a similar problem in the Akron area, which resulted in the dismissal of the Deputy Registrar.
