NAID RULING ON SOFTWARE SANITATION

The NAID Board of Directors has decided that for the time being, NAID will not certify the process of destroying information on computer hard drives by the use of software that overwrites the information. This decision means that NAID will only certify physical destruction as the means of information destruction on hard drives.

In coming to this decision, the NAID Board considered written arguments put forth by both proponents and opponents of software sanitation (as it is called).

The NAID Board does remain open to the concept of software sanitation in the event that new information or technology becomes available.

Any NAID Member who would like a copy of the written arguments used as the basis of this decision can request them by email from certification@naidonline.org.
