On December 8, 2008 WPEC in West Palm Beach reported that more than 200 files with personal information had been discovered at a recycling site in the city. The information included mortgage paperwork, social security numbers and phone numbers. The discarded documents were found by a person who was dropping off recycling items.

When two Deputies arrived from the Palm Beach County Sheriff Department, they gathered the paperwork and stated that all of the information would be destroyed. The mortgage companys listed on the documents were 1st Metropolitan Mortgage and Empire Equity. These mortgage companies are based in North Carolina. Even though the documents were improperly discarded in Florida, the legal departments in North Carolina should be prepared for any legal repercussions stemming from the improper disposal of the mortgage documents.
