$25.5 Billion Lawsuit Expected for Stolen Customer Data

Korean Times reported on November 7, 2008 that Korea’s second largest oil refinery is facing another class action lawsuit for failing to protect the privacy of millions of customers. The latest suit is filed on behalf of 13,026 people against GS-Caltex.

The $25.5 billion lawsuit stems from the September 2008 discovery of two compact discs in a Seoul garbage bin. The discs contained GS-Caltex's customer database of more than 11 million Korean citizens. Three employees were arrested for illegally downloading the information and trying to sell it on the black market.
