FBI Investigates Extortion Threat to Reveal Patient Data

On November 7, 2008 the NY Times posted an article stating that prescription benefits management company, Express Scripts, had received an anonymous extortion letter threatening to expose the personal information of 75 patients whose prescriptions are managed by the company. Express officials are cooperating with the FBI investigation. Express manages prescription benefits for roughly 50 million people through thousands of clients, including health insurers, employers and union-sponsored plans.

A spokesman for the company said that Express Scripts was still trying to ascertain the exact nature of the theft. Secure information storage and destruction is the first step that Express Scripts should consider in order to avoid a catastrophic incident like this in the future.
