Police In Georgia Improperly Discard Personal Documents

On October 17, 2008 WALB News in Albany, Georgia reported that a business owner found police reports, names and social security numbers, dumped in the trash behind an Albany business. On October 21, 2008 WALB news reported that Officer Rodney Brown admitted while working the night shift he cleaned out his car and threw the sensitive information into a dumpster.

Albany Police Chief James Younger stated that this action violates the police department policy to shred documents with personal information and that it also violates the Georgia law that requires sensitive documents to be properly destroyed. The policies and procedures for secure information destruction are being reviewed and reiterated to employees of the police department. Disciplinary action against Officer Rodney Brown is being investigated.
