Civil Lawsuites Bankrupt Companies that do not Secure Data

Entrepreneur reported on September 19, 2008 that both federal and state governments have increased the requirements for employers to protect personal data. Also, private companies with at least 15 employees must comply with the Americans With Disabilities Act requirement for privacy and confidentiality protection. The article in Entrepreneur states that class action lawsuits by individuals, claiming companies didn't secure data properly or failed to notify affected individuals, have resulted in damages that bankrupt both small and large companies.
