NAID to Serve on Records Abandonment Response Task Force

Bookmark and Share

NAID has been invited to participate as one of a select group of organizations working on policy recommendations and response scenarios to address the growing problem of records abandonment. While abandoned records have always been a problem for authorities responsible for privacy protection, the issue is reaching a new level of attention as a result of the increasing number of cases emerging from the mortgage industry collapse.

Planning for the work of the task force has already begun but meetings are not expected to begin until this August.

Among the range of issues on which the task force will potentially be developing recommendations are 1) assigning responsibility for proper disposal of abandoned records, 2) a protocol for reporting abandoned records, and 3) accountability, prosecution and restitution related to abandoning records containing personal information.
