Missouri Department of Social Services Caught not Shredding

Bookmark and Share

According to an article posted to the website of ABC-affiliate KSPR News on March 20th, the state of Missouri is taking heat for compromising the personal information of its citizens. State files containing names, social security numbers and even birth certificates have routinely been thrown in unsecured recycling bins.

The report states that the Department of Social Services requires employees to shred or witness shredding of the files, but that it is not happening. According to a person within the department, when the division of family services moved in with the division of child support enforcement there were too many files to shred.

A special assistant within the department says they thought the recycling company would do it.
