California Town Considering Dumpster-Diving Ban

Bookmark and Share

According to a commentary posted to the website of the Modesto Bee on December 6th, the city’s leaders will be considering a new law in January that would make it illegal to "rummage, explore, tamper with, move, remove, tip, deface, destroy, scavenge or otherwise search" a waste container. The purpose of the law is to protect any personal information that might have been discarded.

The article reports that those caught digging in dumpsters would be fined $500.

The author takes issue with the proposed law, stating that it is unenforceable.

NAID’s position on such laws is that they actually make things worse by giving people a false sense of security.
