OMB Issues Data protection Guidelines

Bookmark and Share

On June 15, the Office of Management and Budget (OMB) released new guidelines for protecting the confidentiality of information gathered in statistical surveys sponsored by federal agencies. The new guidelines are designed to help government agencies implement the Confidential Information Protection and Statistical Efficiency Act of 2002 (CIPSEA) and provides for government-wide uniformity when collecting and maintaining confidential statistical information.

The CIPSEA has had minimal impact on secure destruction. The only long term implication may be the promulgation of information protection standards, including for data disposal, which the law authorizes federal agencies to develop through the National Institute of Standards and Testing (NIST).
