According to an article in the October 21, 2006 edition of the Washington Post by Ellen Nakashima, used cell phones contain a hoard of personal data for identity thieves and computer hackers to exploit. This information is retrievable even when the devices have been supposedly cleansed of data by using easy to buy software available at the local computer store.
