UK Banks are Messing Up as I.D. Theft Concerns Rise

An article appearing in The Times (UK) on October 28, 2006, says that the public is being exposed to identity fraud because high street banks are dumping details of their customers' accounts on the street.

In an interview with The Times, Richard Thomas, the UK top data protection official says that he has received "highly disturbing" evidence that personal information, including bank statements and loan applications, had been left in bin bags on streets throughout the country.

There is not much doubt that I.D. Theft is increasing in the UK and elsewhere in Europe. Flagrant disregard for confidentiality will no doubt be bringing much more attention to proper disposal there – at least that is what Mr. Thomas is promising.
