According to an article in the Washington Times, the Council of Better Business Bureaus has launched a national campaign aimed at getting small businesses to make improvements to data their data protection procedures.

The effort is titled "Security & Privacy--Made Simpler." The BBB is distributing free security and privacy tool kits to businesses. The kits include brochures that address the security of customer and employee data. The data protection kit was released this week, while the business data kit will not be available until fall. The kit is clear to remind small businesses that they could be penalized by the government if they fail to safeguard customer data. According to the article, two-thirds of all American small businesses lack an information security plan. Half of all U.S. small businesses have had a data security breach within the past year, according to a 2005 survey by the Small Business Technology Institute.
