A San Diego City employee pleaded guilty to two felony counts of identity theft after she was accused of stealing water customers' data from a computerized billing system and charged with 36 felonies and misdemeanors including mail theft, forgery, and computer-related crimes.

She reportedly stole personal information from customers and used it to buy items online while she was at work. She then passed the stolen information to other identity thieves, say prosecutors.

The city auditor, John Torell, is being ordered to conduct a review of the city's use and protection of consumer data. In the wake of the arrests, the city will start immediately to notify the Water Department's 250,000 customers of the security breach, says the mayor’s spokesman.
