Bookmark and Share

In January, Hong Kong Privacy Commissioner for Personal Data Allan Chiang published Guidance on Personal Data Erasure and Anonymisation to provide advice to organizational data users on how to erase personal data properly by means of digital deletion and/or physical destruction.

Upon issuing the guidance, Commissioner Chang noted that, "It is important for organizations to manage personal data throughout its lifecycle, from data collection to data destruction. Not all of them do a good job of determining the appropriate duration of retention of the data with due regard to the purpose of data collection and destroying it at the end of its useful life."

The guidance also covers legal requirements under the personal data ordinance, including the requirements for outsourcing data erasure responsibilities.
