During his recent visit Down Under that included a successful NAID-ANZ 2013 Conference, release of the NAID-ANZ Disposal Habits Study, and two presentations to local ASIS International chapters, NAID CEO Bob Johnson met with representatives of the country’s Attorney General’s Office. Johnson was joined by NAID-ANZ Chair Tony Tanti.

The purpose of the meeting was to share NAID’s global perspective on secure destruction standards, especially regarding NAID Certification, the association’s involvement in the development of the European practice standard for secure destruction operations, and the new DIN practice standard.

“It was very productive, especially for an introductory meeting,” said Tanti. “We certainly left knowing that they are serious about data protection and the improvement of standards. The most important thing is that the lines of communication are now open and a dialog has begun.”

The meeting closed with a number of follow-up activities for both parties. Australia currently has a government-supported security certification that includes a scheduled audit every three years, which both sides agreed is not designed to effectively police the industry.
