NAID-Canada Chair Kevin Perry submitted a commentary on a recent, high-profile data disposal incident to Saskatchewan’s The StarPhoenix, the region’s main print and online media outlet. That op-ed piece was published last week.

“The decision by the newspaper’s staff to print the piece reflects the growing importance of the issue as well as NAID’s ability to bring such issues to light,” said NAID CEO Bob Johnson. “It is one of the advantages of having a proactive association with credibility and integrity.”

“NAID’s consumer attitudes studies have shown that most citizens believe destruction of discarded personal information is already a crime,” added Perry. “When they read an editorial pointing out that it is in fact not the case, it puts that much more pressure on lawmakers to do something about it.”
