Earlier this week, NAID Board member Kristjan Backman of Winnipeg-based Phoenix Recycling testified before the Canadian House of Commons’ Standing Committee on Access to Information, Privacy and Ethics’ PIPEDA Review hearings. Backman’s comments called for regulatory support for clearer direction and stronger enforcement of data destruction requirements.
“Fortunately, we’re talking to a sympathetic audience,” says Backman. “The review committee is clearly gearing their thinking along the lines of the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR),” referring to the new regulatory framework that goes into effect in Europe next May. “They know that Canada will be woefully behind the rest of the world in data protection if we do not up our game,” adds Backman.
