Improper Disposal of Paper Records Leads to Breach Notification in New York

According to a report posted on the NYU Langone Medical Center website, when documents containing personal information were mistakenly discarded, compacted and buried in a landfill by New York State Medical Center's Hospital for Joint Diseases (HJD), the hospital was required to provide breach notification to approximately 2,600 patients that their personal information was at risk.

Medical facilities often lose sight of the fact that improperly discarded paper documents can also result in data breach notification incidents. According to the recent information from the US Department of Health and Human Services, as many as 20% of the hundreds of breach notifications per year involved lost or improperly discarded paper records.
