Illinois Department of Insurance Will Not Fine MetLife

March 9, 2010- Insurer MetLife recently admitted to the improper disposal of sensitive data that could have led to the theft of 171 customer identities—however, the Illinois Department of Insurance has indicated that they will not pursue action against the company. The incident resulted from placing insurance applications in a dumpster without shredding them and was originally reported by WREX in January. While the Department of Insurance may have decided to forego any regulatory action, customers in the area may consider this incident when shopping for insurance in the future.
