State Launches Inquiry into Records Breach

December 6, 2009- The State of Oregon has begun an investigation into whether or not two of its own agencies broke state law by dumping records containing Social Security numbers and other sensitive data into an open recycling bin. The Department of Consumer and Business Services is investigating whether or not the Housing and Consumer Services Department and state Parks and Recreation Department violated the Oregon Consumer Identity Theft Protection Act. While enforcement of the law is rare—to date only one fine has been levied—the state claims that is taking this incident seriously.
