Treasury Investigation Criticizes IRS Disposal Practices

According to an article by Brian Krebs appearing in the Washington Post on May 21st, an US Treasury Department audit, following the discovery of tax records outside separate IRS offices in a number of cities, found that the nation’s tax collector disregarded policy and common sense. 

According to the article, which is commenting on the Treasury findings, the Inspector General for Tax Administration also found that IRS officials failed to consistently verify whether contract employees who have access to taxpayer documents had passed background checks and had trouble finding anyone responsible for overseeing most of the facilities that the IRS contracted with to burn or shred sensitive taxpayer documents.
