Hotels Data Disposal Unknowingly Complicit in ID Theft Scheme

Hotels around the Nashville airport careless discarding of guests' personal information has likely resulted in them being the victims of identity theft, say police in a report by Sara Dorsey of local station WSMV posted on May 1, 2009.

After looking into a rash of ID theft claims, investigators discovered the key was hotel dumpsters and a man who was allegedly sending people to dumpster-dive for credit card information.

According to the report, an individual would call the man and say that he or she wanted to buy a certain item from a supply store. Police say the man would direct them to the hotel dumpster and use the credit card numbers obtained there to buy the item and sell it to the person for cash at half price.
